Seaham High School is always looking at ways to improve and this year we are having a special focus on homework. Research from the Education Endowment Foundation shows that ‘the impact of homework on learning is consistently positive (leading to on average five months’ additional progress)’. A substantial amount of that homework should be based around developing Literacy and reading, which are two key areas we have identified will help improve students’ progress. Many of our students quite simply do not read enough and it is the challenge of every parent and teacher to promote this.
I wanted to inform parents and carers about the support and sanctions in place to help us improve the quality of homework submitted. Teachers will set homework and record this on classcharts, which all students and parents/carers have access to. Whilst in Year 7 and 8 this will also be recorded in the Student organisers by the student. The flow diagram attached shows the procedure to be followed by staff.
I am sure you will support the school by discussing this with your child and making sure they complete their homework to the best of their abilities.
