WJEC GCSE Home Economics: Child Development
Outline of Course
This course is ideal for those wishing to work in children’s care. Students study the skills and knowledge required to support the effective development of the child from conception to their 5th birthday. This will involve the study of parenthood, pregnancy, diet, health and care of the child, development of the child, and the support for the parent and child.
Method of Assessment
Assessment of the course is broken down into three elements as shown below.
Written Paper (Unit 1) (Sat June of Year 11)
40% of the total marks
Research Task (Unit 2) Controlled Assessment (Completed in Year 10)
20% of the total marks
Child Study (Unit 3) (Completed in Year 11)
40% of the total marks
Progression routes from the course and potential job occupations
Success in this course provides a strong and appropriate foundation to move onto other child care related courses such as BTEC, Apprenticeships, and NVQs.
There are many occupations that would benefit from successfully completing a GCSE Home Economics: Child Development, some examples include; Social Worker, Nursery Nurse, Early Years Teacher, Nanny, Children’s Nurse or Health Visitor.

Edexcel BTEC First Award in Health and Social Care
This course is ideal for students wishing to work in any area of health and social care. Students will study the development of the individual from birth to old age; good practice in care settings; nutrition; and health promotion.
Method of Assessment
External assessment 25% of final grade (sat in January of year 10)
Internal assessment 75% of final grade (involved the completion of 7 pieces of written work)
Progression routes from the course and potential job occupations
Success in this course provides a strong and appropriate foundation to move onto other heath and social care related courses such as BTEC, Apprenticeships, and NVQs.
There are many occupations that would benefit from successfully completing a BTEC in health and social caret, some examples include; Social Worker, Physiotherapist, Children’s Nurse, Midwife, Occupational Therapist, Health Visitor, etc..

Homework
Homework is set approximately once every two weeks and will consist mainly of past examination questions on topics being covered in class together with research for course work.
Enrichment
Students following either of the courses offered will have the opportunity to cover ‘Baby Think it All Over’ which is a short course aimed at reducing teen pregnancies. The course culminates in the students taking a Realife Baby home for the weekend so that they can experience the responsibly of having a baby.
